The selection from last year's festival continues with a new film from India.
The Voyage Beyond (Antarjali Yatra)
[Bengal in the 1830s. A dying octogenarian is brought to his cremation site on the banks of the Ganges, only for his astrologer to announce that he is destined to enter heaven with a mate. An impoverished fellow-Brammin, offers up his own daughter for marriage and 'suttee' - the burning on the pyre of the widowed bride. However, the proximity of such nubile youthfulness leads to signs of revival in the old man. The conflict between outlawed convention and irrepressible human desires is observed with compassion and wry humour, highlighted by sensitive camerawork.
Screenplay by GOUTAM GHOSE from a story by KAMAL KUMAR MAJUMDAR. Produced by RAVI MALIK and DEBASHISH MAJUMDAR
Directed by GOUTAM GHOSE
(Bengali/Hindi dialogue with English subtitles. First showing on British television).
