At St Paul's Julian Richards helps to locate the remains of Lawrence Spencer, Clerk of Works and assistant to Sir Christopher Wren in the construction of the cathedral. Archaeologists have been asked to move Spencer's remains to protect them from new building plans, so Richards uses the opportunity to explore the story of St Paul's through the life of the only man, apart from Wren, to be present for the laying of both the first and final stone.
