A special concert, live from Coventry Cathedral, to commemorate today's 50th anniversary of the bombing of the German city Dresden, twin city of Coventry whose gothic cathedral was destroyed by Nazi warplanes in 1940. Artists and war is the theme of the event which features the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier, performing Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, with soloist Stephen Kovacevich, and Sir Michael Tippett's Piano Concerto, played by Martino Tirimo - a work directly inspired by the Beethoven concerto, and representing Tippett's own, very different response to war.
Sir Michael celebrated his 90th birthday last month. During the interval, he looks at the composer's experience as a pacifist in Britain during the last war, with contributions from friends and associates, and there is archive footage of Dresden and Coventry. Composer Michael Berkeley narrates a feature in which tonight's two pianists discuss the similarities between the concertos.
