Arena Mishima

on BBC Two England

Another chance to see this portrait of one of the most outstanding and controversial Japanese writers of his generation, shown as part of the Made in Japan series. Although Mishima was nominated three times for the Nobel Prize, wrote 40 novels and 18 plays, his reputation rests more on his bizarre suicide by ritual hara-kiri 21 years ago. An intellectual obsessed by western culture, he was also a right-wing militarist, and a nationalist who believed his emperor was god. In Tokyo Arena reconstructs the story of this contradictory figure against the background of Japan's wartime humiliation and astonishing post-war recovery. A feature film re-creating
Mishima's life is at 10.15pm. Producer Michael Macintyre Senes editors Nigel Finch and Anthony Wall
