Italian Cinema: Michelangelo Antonioni's The Girl Friends (Le Amiche)

on BBC Two England

This week's presentation in the series of feature films reflecting some of the finest work of many of Italy's most famous and talented directors and artists stars Eleonora Rossi-Drago, Yvonne Furneaux, Madeleine Fischer

A Rome couturier who returns to her native Turin to open a boutique becomes involved with a group of young women who lead empty, boring, and emotionally insecure lives.
Key to L'Avventura and many of Antonioni's later films, The Girl Friends is based on a melancholy tale by Cesare Pavese. The five female parts are beautifully cast, in particular Yvonne Furneaux as Momina.
