The Hollywood Musical: The Vagabond King

on BBC Two England

A selection of musical milestones from the golden days of the silver screen
Tonight: the 1956 production The Vagabond King
Starring Kathryn Grayson, Oreste
with Rita Moreno, Sir Cedric Hardwicke

A spectacular adaptation of Rudolf Friml's famous musical play, this film tells the story of Francois Villon, the poet-adventurer who leads a group of 'vagabonds' who rob the rich to give to the poor. He becomes involved in intrigues at the court of Louis XI. Romantic interest is provided by Kathryn Grayson, who starred in two recent Hollywood Musicals on BBC-2, The Desert Song and The Grace Moore Story.
