Fourth in the play cycle 'The Promised Years' by Iain MacCormick.
The action takes place in the farmhouse in Italy, already seen in 'The Liberators'.
The time is Spring 1954

The play sequence that began in an Italy at war now comes full cycle with the return of Kent, the soldier with the conscience, to the little farmhouse from which he directed the operation that resulted in the destruction of Camevento. Nine years have passed and the town has been rebuilt; it is clean and shining, better than the old, but the fact of its destruction is still remembered. Time has not healed all the wounds...
Papa and Mama Valbella are little changed; he is still philosophical, she sure has a sharp tongue. Lucia, the dreamy young girl whose sweetheart was killed, is now a very different person-more sophisticated but still troubled by memories. Vincente, the former partisan leader, is much the same in character; it is his situation that has changed.
For though these are the promised years of peace, Kent who once thought of himself as the liberator finds that there is still violence on the banks of the river to which he returns.
