The Sixth Leeds International Piano Competition

on BBC Two England

The Finals
For the last ten days, nearly 100 pianists from 27 countries have been competing in the preliminary rounds of this famous competition. Now just the six finalists remain. Each of them will play a complete concerto with orchestra: three play tonight; three tomorrow night.
BBC2 covers both these concerts live and at 10.45 pm tomorrow night will be returning to Leeds for the announcement of the winner.
Apart from a prize of £2,000 and the Princess Mary Gold Medal , the winner will receive over 70 offers of engagements - and the prestige of winning one of the world's most important music awards. The very first winner (in 1963) was Michael Roll, who is this year a member of the jury - together with such famous music personalities as Artur Balsam, Louis Kentner, Nikita Magaloff, Phyllis Sellick and Rosalyn Tureck.
Chairman of the Jury is Lord Boyle of Handsworth
The 1978 Leeds International Piano Competition is presented in association with Harveys of Bristol.
