The world's richest opal field, Coober Pedy, lies in the middle of a vast sunburnt plain; the population live underground, like moles, sheltering from the heat, dust and flies. There are educated men and illiterate men, crooks, crackpots and vagabonds - all seized by the same insatiable hunger for opal.
