Edge of the Blizzard
1: Kings of the Sea and the Air
Two thousand kilometres south of Australia, Macquarie Island lies isolated in the stormy Southern Ocean - a life-raft for millions of penguins, seals and albatrosses. Here they come ashore to breed.
Tonight's World About Us is the first of two films on the spectacular inhabitants of this bustling animal metropolis.
King penguins were once boiled down for their oil in giant pressure cookers. Now protected, these birds again crowd Macquarie's beaches living in a carefully ordered society in which giant petrels, great skuas, and feral cats have a vital role to play.
