It's Trad, Dad

on BBC Radio 2

1/4. Prior to the arrival of the Beatles in 1962, the pop charts featured, quite remarkably, trad jazz. Chris Barber, Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk all had huge hits. George Melly recalls this extraordinary period when, however briefly, trad jazz hit the mainstream. Melly begins with a look back at the formative postwar years of British trad jazz, featuring interviews with "trad boom" stars George Webb and Chris Barber.
