The troops moved on to the streets of Northern
Ireland on this day 25 years ago. The Troubles had already claimed their first victim, in the early hours of the morning, when John Gallaher was walking home after an evening's drinking in Armagh and blundered into a riot.
Since then there have been more than 3,500 ictims. This film attempts, by talking to relatives of those killed, to picture the immediate and long-term effects of sudden, brutal tereavement.
Among those victims were Margaret Hearst , a part-time member of the Ulster Defence Regiment murdered in front of her three-year-old daughter; her father, kidnapped and dumped near the old family home where Margaret had been killed; army caterer Noor Baz Khan , whose son travels to Londonderry to see the place where his father died; and cancer specialist Gordon Hamilton-Fairley , blown up in London by a bomb intended for his neighbour.
At the end of the film 3,500 banners are unfurled, symbolising the extent of the carnage. Producer Peter Dale
