Some years after Mrs. Joe's death, while Pip is still working at the Forge, a Mr. Jaggers arrives to inform him of his 'Great Expectations'. His benefactor's identity must remain hidden, though privately Pip believes it to be Miss Havisham, and he is to be educated as becomes a gentleman. On his last night at home Joe and Biddy become engaged, and at dawn they wish him God speed as he sets out with the whole world spread before him.
