Since 1921 the British
Legion, granted a royal charter in 1925, has represented all British ex-servicemen regardless of rank. Its annual Poppy Appeal, raising income for the benefit of members in need, is a focus of the Legion's activities, and reaches its climax at the Festival of Remembrance, when thousands of poppy petals fall from the roof of the Royal Albert Hall in silent memory of those who have lost their lives in combat over the years.
Raymond Baxter describes the scene at this year's service, attended by Her Majesty the Queen, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and other representatives of the Royal
Family together with members of the Royal British Legion. The service is conducted by the Rt
Rev Michael Mann and narrated by Richard Baker
