'The Case of Dr. Ambrose'
Only in the most desperate circumstances would any man contemplate an exchange of identities with another of whose life he knew little. But Norman Bancroft is desperate enough to take the risk, and his motives are not entirely selfish.
On a false accusation by a woman patient, he has been struck off the Medical Register at a time when he is near success in experiments with a vaccine which may save thousands of lives, and in such circumstances he believes himself justified in entering into the arrangement with his cousin, Tony Ambrose-another doctor, but one who has lost his enthusiasm for the profession.
A sympathetic colleague will perform the minor plastic surgery necessary to complete the likeness between the cousins. Then Bancroft will enter practice again as Ambrose; Ambrose will be given money to emigrate as Bancroft; and the experiments will continue. It would all be quite safe and simple, were it not for the impossibility of taking on another man's future without also inheriting his past.
