This nostalgic love-story set on an idyllic summer's day has remained one of the best-loved of Renoir's works. A Parisian ironmonger takes his family on a Sunday outing to the country. While he snores through the afternoon oblivious of the beauty around him, both his wife and daughter find romance on the river bank. To the wit and bitter-sweetness of Guy de Maupassant's story, Renoir's film adds a serenity and joy underlined by the simple musical score.
