East of Bombay
Eighty per cent of India's 650 million people live in the villages. Children die of diseases long forgotten in the West, and adult life is blighted by TB, leprosy and blindness. Health care is poor. Most doctors prefer to live in the cities, where life is easier.
But two Indian doctors, RAJNIKANT and MABELLE AROLE, are training a group of illiterate villagers to tackle many of their own health problems. It seems that they can often do a better job than doctors. One such village health worker is a Hindu untouchable called SALUBAI. She is now one of the most respected women in her village, Rajuree. Salubai's work has led to better health and to dramatic social change.
