The World About Us: Through the Gates of Hell

on BBC Two England

The aim of this expedition, featured in last week's Radio Times, was the first-ever trans-navigation of British Columbia from North to South, nearly 1,500 miles by boat. First a hard struggle up into the Rocky Mountain Trench; then a 90-mile portage with 100-pound packs; and last, vast canyons and huge rapids, among them the dreaded Hell's Gate Rapid that has drowned many.
This was the same team who last week ventured into the Headless Valley - among them PC Ben Usher from Yorkshire. But the second stage proved far tougher. The programme presents not only a picture of a vast and beautiful wilderness but also an insight into the nature of explorers and exploration - of enduring, as well as enjoying.
