Rodolfo, a young writer, becomes a temporary resident at a convent in Rome in order to help a Polish priest write his war memoirs. He quickly gets to know its strange community of exiles, and eventually finds himself in conflict with the forceful Sister Geraldine, the spiritual director of the convent.
