This two-part drama is being shown throughout the world tonight and tomorrow - exactly 50 years after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on 30 January 1933.
Adapted from the novel by LION FEUCHTWANGER first published in 1933 1: In the autumn of 1932 the Oppermanns are a successful Berlin Jewish family. One runs their prosperous family furniture store, another is a famous doctor, a third a well-known man of letters. For them Hitler seems a receding threat as the Nazi share of the vote declines. Within months, however, Germany is a fascist state and the civilisation of which the Oppermanns are a part is disappearing.
