Alfred Brendel plays
Beethoven's last sonata, the profound C minor, Opus HI. Completed in 1822, the work comprises two strongly contrasted movements in perhaps the most powerful of all the sonatas. Of the final chord, Brendel wrote 'This chord ... opens up the silence that follows, a silence we now perceive to be more important than the sound that preceded it.'
