The Ascent of Man

on BBC Two England

A personal view by J. Bronowski in 13 programmes
11: Knowledge of Certainty?
Six million people were sacrificed to the belief that there is a final solution to every question. Information and knowledge are the property of every man but certainty belongs only to gods. The great achievement of physics in the 20th century has been to show that absolute certainty, in' science or outside of it, is beyond our grasp. When physicists formulated their Principle of Uncertainty in the pre-war Germany of rising Nazism they could not know that the ironies of history would lead them to confront the fiery reality of Hiroshima.
