A programme for children under five
Nursery rhymes, stories, and music
This week's stories for the under-fives are about Sam and little Wu. Sam is small and round, and little Wu is covered with fur and has a long tail; he goes everywhere with Sam. and together they have a different adventure every day. The stories have been written by Mary Palmer.
We have referred before to the children's desire to know more about the characters in their stories. They like hearing a favourite tale over and over agajn-as one mother put it, ' they do so love a groove at that age '-but they like also, and especially as they get a little older, to hear new stories about characters whose acquaintance they have already made. Thus, their world pieces itself comfortably together, while the safe satisfactions of the familiar form a base from which to reach out into new experiences.
This is the first time we have devoted a complete week to stories about the same people, and we hope that, having made the acquaintance of Sam and little Wu today, our listeners will grow fond of them during the week and by Friday regard them as old friends.
