Sunday Grandstand

on BBC Two England

Introduced by Desmond Lynam
Wimbledon 87 Men's Final
When it was decided in 1968 to award prize money at
Wimbledon, Rod Laver was able to draft what now appears a measly E2,000 into an Australian bank for his efforts. The then market price of a four-bedroomed house in London SW19 was £12,968. When in 1986 Boris Becker added a further E140,000 to the E130,000 he'd won the year before, the same house near the All England Club would fetch E425,000 which only goes to prove that property's a better bet if you're struggling to get the old first serve in. The finalists appear on centre court at around 1.50 and it is anticipated that Boris will at least be one of those. Commentators
