Martti Talvela

on BBC Two England

The Finnish bass is 6 ft 8 ins tall and at the outset of his career failed to get into the chorus of the Helsinki Opera because they could not afford to buy him boots. Twelve years ago he was teacher in a tiny village school deep in the heart of Finland and it is there that Bernard Levin interviews him. The programme includes scenes from some of his most celebrated roles.
