Books has become a legend. He is feared and admired as one of the West's greatest gunfighters.
When Books arrives in a small town he seeks the advice of Dr Hostetler, who diagnoses cancer. The ageing gunfighter decides that his remaining days will not be wasted. In his last film, John Wayne plays J.B. Books brilliantly in a style which mixes the ending of his own career with the dying days of the mythical gunfighter he portrays.
