The British Film Comedy: The Smallest Show on Earth

on BBC One London

A season of Britain's great laughter-makers.
Starring Peter Sellers, Margaret Rutherford, Virginia McKenna, Bill Travers, Bernard Miles
A Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat production

The Spensers, an impoverished young couple, inherit a cinema in the North of England. Joy turns to dismay when they find it is only a run-down little flea-pit-The Bijou. With the cinema they inherit its staff-all living anachronisms: Old Tom, the doorman; Mrs. Fazackalee, the Edwardian cashier and silent-film piano accompanist; and Mr. Quill, the bibulous projectionist. (Bernard Miles, Margaret Rutherford, and Peter Sellers play this delightful trio with nostalgic affection.) When a neighbouring super-cinema makes a bid for The Bijou, the Spensers have to make the decision whether to sell up over the heads of their staff or to try to make a go of it.
