We hear a lot about 'job satisfaction.' But how many people's satisfaction is confined to their weekly pay packet and what spare time is left them when the factory whistle blows?
And with automation and the growth of ever-larger companies, do we increasingly feel just small cogs in an ever bigger machine - a machine over which we have no effective control?

'For most people, half the time they've been awake, they've been doing things other people told them to do, in order to meet plans other people have formed, so as to make other people more powerful or more important. How much freedom do most people get; how much development do they have?'

Ken Coates from the Institute for Workers' Control and four people from the Rolls Royce factory in Coventry ask some of the questions that underlie much of today's industrial unrest and say what they think are the pointers for the future.
