Two young subalterns, Drake and Millington, take up their duties with the 20th Indian Light Cavalry at a lonely outpost on the North-West frontier. Intent on dismissal at the end of his probationary period, Millington goes out of his way to earn the disapproval of his seniors, not least by flirting with Marjorie Scarlett, widow of the regimental hero. When Mrs Scarlett is viciously assaulted during the Regimental Ball, Millington is arrested. Unconcerned about the outcome of the court martial, he chooses the inexperienced Drake to defend him...
