East European director Walerian Borowczyk had been working in the West for many years but he returned to his native Poland to make this screen version of the novel by Stefan Zeromski , an important figure in Polish literature. In his film Borowczyk gives a passionate reality to Zeromski's melodramatic world of fallen virgins, dedicated social workers, dukes, cheats and pimps.
Ewa has led a very sheltered life, religiously confessing her impure thoughts about her parents' lodger and dutifully doing penance for them. Then the handsome Lukasz arrives as a lodger and impure thoughts give way to a. mad passion....
