Johnny Morris: North from Lion City: 4: Tapioca, Kampongs, and trains

on BBC Two England

Starting at Singapore, he travels by road and rail through Malaya to Northern Thailand

"Penang... is an enchanting little island... no tricky tides or crafty currents, no smarm of oil or snapping shark. A beautiful, blissful place."
In this week's film Johnny finds a Sago factory deep in the Malayan jungle and a nearby Kampongone of those idyllic Malay villages whose houses are all on stilts and where the children still seem to lead the sort of 'jungle-boy' life of children's books. His last stop before catching a train for Bangkok is Penang, where he discovers a temple full of venomous snakes.
