Billy Wilder's Irma la Douce

on BBC Two England

starring Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine
Gendarme Nestor Patou is an enthusiast at his work. But when he decides to pull a one-man raid on a Parisian whore-house he bags more than he bargains for - including the Chief of Police. Also among his prisoners is the tempestous Irma. In the first of this evening's films, director Wilder takes a mellow view of infidelity, providing Jack Lemmon with a superb 'dual' role and Shirley MacLaine one of her finest parts as the beautiful and brash Irma.
