Tuesday Cinema: Major Barbara

on BBC Two England

Starring Wendy Hiller, Rex Harrison, Robert Morley, Robert Newton, Emlyn Williams, Sybil Thorndike, Deborah Kerr
Bernard Shaw and Gabriel Pascal's second film production was the ironic comedy of the rich girl who joins the Salvation Army to save souls, but is disillusioned when the Army is willing to take money from her wealthy armament-manufacturer father.
Made in 1940 under difficult war-time conditions, Major Barbara features a number of fine performances, particularly from Wendy Hiller in the name part, following up her great success in Pygmalion.
