Artists'Journeys

on BBC Two England

A series of films for the Commissions and Collaborations season in which a contemporary artist visits places which inspired an artist from the past. Eric Fischl on Pierre Bonnard
The work of New Yorker
Eric Fischl , the "bad boy" of American art, depicts psycho-sexual dreams that reveal the darker side of American suburban life. French artist Pierre Bonnard attracted great popularity and admiration - eventually becoming a national hero - for his sunny scenes celebrating bourgeois domestic life.
Fischl examines Bonnard's work from the start of his artistic career in 1889, when he sold a poster to a champagne house. Following in his fellow artist's footsteps, Fischl travels to Paris and Cannes, where he discovers that Bonnard's work became an intensely personal record of a troubled and emotionally tangled relationship and a life full of dark secrets.
