An inhabitant of 20-years' standing, he treks around his preferred weekend haunts, meets with landowners from the local tenanted village, chats with the son of Vanessa Bell, painter, sister of Virginia Woolf, and part of the Bloomsbury Group - and rounds off by sharing an operatic duet with a local landlord.

Simon Calder, travel editor of the Independent, ventures into the South American country of Costa Rica. Landing in the capital San Jose, he makes his way through the volcanic, forested landscape to the coast, where he finds perfect beaches and Caribbean influences.
