Steam transport on the roads faced bitter opposition from hostile stagecoach and railway owners, and the problems of weight of engine, refuelling, and poor roads delayed progress.
The invention of the internal combustion engine provided a new stimulus to road vehicles, and led to the development of the motor car as we know it.
