In 1881, the Panama Canal was a snake-infested forest and swamp, harbouring yellow fever and malaria, with sawgrass that shredded skin like a razor.
Of the half-million workers who toiled for decades to create this new wonder of the world, 28,000 died.
Today the canal carries 12,000 ships a year. But its future is threatened, because of damage to the rain forest on which Panama depends for its life-blood....
