Alan Bennett first visited the Leeds City Art Gallery as an 8-year-old boy in 1942 when, he remembers, its collection of paintings was somewhat lacking in quantity, if not interest.
Today, many of the pictures hanging there are like old friends and, watching and listening as he makes his way through the gallery, Bennett discovers how others perceive the works and what inspired their visit.
