Opera on 3: Live from the Met: Der Rosenkavalier

on BBC Radio 3

The new season of New York Metropolitan Opera live broadcasts begins in style with Richard Strauss 's most lushly romantic work, full of eloquent and glorious music. Set in 18th-century Vienna, it tells a story of amorous intrigue between the aristocratic Marschallin, her lover Octavian -the Knight of the Rose- and the beautiful young Sophie. And in a new weekly series Rodney Milnes will be taking a sideways look at each of this season's works.
