The Lyric. Hammersmith Michael Oliver reports on the re-opening and discovers that behind the concrete and glass facade the Victorian interior of the old Lyric has been lovingly restored. Sir John Gielgud pays his first visit to the new theatre and recalls landmarks in the Lyric's history. Also taking part are the artistic administrator Bill Thomley ; the resident director, David Giles ; architect, Derek Woolland ; actress, Fenella Fielding; composer, Sandy Wilson : and the grandson of the Lyric's first great actor/manager, John East.
