Devizes, Wiltshire
Devizes no longer has its
12th-century castle and on the site is 'a pantomime recreation of the Victorian
Period'. It retains its medieval street plan and the original castle's enormous outer bailey has become the largest market place in the west of England. In 1810 the Kennet and Avon Canal was opened - the Devizes flight of 29 locks is the second longest in England. Bath stone was able to travel as never before and in its heyday the canal changed the face of the town. Photography COLIN WALDECK Producer JANE COLES (R)
