The Father of Europe

on BBC Two England

A special repeat of last night's film profile of Jean Monnet
He has spent his lifetime persuading Europe's leaders that they had no choice but to unite and in a real way 1972, with Britain firmly on the road to Rome, is his year.

Tonight, the Prime Minister, The Rt Hon Edward Heath MP, and Germany's Chancellor Willy Brandt talk about Monnet and his work.
He created the European Coal and Steel Community which turned the idea of a united Europe into reality. With Britain's entry into the Common Market growing nearer, he sees his concept as inevitable.
He claims no master plan, that in over half a century of Europolitics he has dealt with situations as they arose. But, as he says in this rare personal interview with Alan Watson 'Your questioning has made me seek and understand things of my past which I have not understood before.'
