A Portrait of the National Gallery
What do ghosts, Monty Python , Iris Murdoch , a reclusive nun and the Prince of Wales have in common? All is revealed in tonight's special behind-the-scenes documentary at the National Gallery. The film reveals why we have Napoleon to thank for the Gallery's foundation, why a suffragette slashed the Rokeby Venus and how the collection of the world's rarest masterpieces was hidden from the Germans in caves during the war. The evening before HM the Queen opens the Sainsbury Wing, HRH the Prince of Wales delivers his verdict on the building which was built in place of the original design - the 'monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much loved, elegant friend'.
