Tonight: The Few
Whatever became of Basher, of 'Ginger'; of 'China'; of 'Hawk-eye'
To an outsider, now, they look like a group of middle-aged family men: some balding, some putting on weight. To one another they are still the fresh-faced bunch of flyers - enthusiastic amateurs - who as 501 County of Gloucester Squadron, fought, and helped to win, the Battle of Britain. In 1940 they were the heroes that we needed then; serving at RAF Kenley, one of the hardest-hit airfields of the Battle of Britain.
Today, 29 years later, the airfield is non-operational and very, very quiet. And the men whom we called the glorious few? Some have gone home to Poland, some have become prosperous, others disillusioned. But for almost every one the Battle of Britain was the most important part of their lives. How long did they remember, how quickly did the rest of us forget?
