At each end of the Mississippi River there is a city. In the north, where winter means 40 degrees of frost, is Minneapolis; sophisticated Americans, with a mixture of contempt and envy, call it Swedesville. In the south, in the steaming basin of the Delta, is New Orleans, the most romantic city in the United States; a city that every American wants to see once before he dies.
