Six programmes on the civilisations of Turkey
Written and introduced by John Julius Norwich
This week's programme is a portrait of two remarkable races, the Armenians and the Seljuks.
The Armenians, a Christian nation on the eastern borders of the Byzantine Empire, developed a brilliant tradition of architecture and sculpture, which can still be seen at Ani, a ruined city on the Russian frontier, and in the perfect island-cathedral of Akhtamar.
Lord Norwich shows evidence that the Seljuk Turks, by contrast, were Islamic nomads from central Asia, who soon learnt to build elegant bridges, caravanserais, mosques, and a chain of breath-taking castles along the shore of the Mediterranean.
