Forty Minutes: Lol: A Bona Queen of Fabularity

on BBC Two England

Forty Minutes of documentary. A season of films portraying issues, stories and characters.
Lol (Lorri Lee) became a queen during his National Service. Demobbed, he joined the Merchant Navy (by accident), and made his stage debut on a passenger liner in Sabrina's gold lame cast-offs. Later he was to become a waiter thanks to glowing references composed by himself on crested note-paper stolen from The Ritz.
Today Lol lives in the suburbs of London and earns his living in the pubs and clubs as a stand-up comic and drag queen in an act that is witty, sophisticated and outrageous.
This film is a portrait of Lol, his friends, and his life past and present. Like Quentin Crisp , he has decided to stake out his own life and live it, whatever people think. On the whole, people find his fun and charm irresistible.
