A Streetcar Named Desire

on BBC Two England

Continuing a short season of films based on the works of TENNESSEE WILLIAMS starring
Marlon Brando , Vivien Leigh
Tennessee Williams ' story of the disastrous relationship between fading Southern belle Blanche Du Bois and her brutish brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski , had won a Pulitzer Prize as a Broadway play. Elia Kazan 's film version won five Oscars including Best Actress for Vivien Leigh 's moving performance as Blanche.
As Stanley Kowalski , the role he had created on Broadway, Marlon Brando became the biggest star in Hollywood and his extraordinary, powerful performance introduced a new style of acting that was to influence a generation-both on and off the screen.
