Britain in the Thirties

on BBC Two England

22 Minutes from London
A garden city to rival Letchworth and Welwyn was created in the woodland south of Chislehurst between the years 1929 and 1939. Almost unchanged to this day, Petts Wood reveals an astonishing array of British suburban designs for living in the 1930s. When the first residents moved in, their only link with the metropolis of London, where most of them worked, was a tiny railway halt. By 1939 a thriving community had grown up, but not without teething problems. Narrator ANDREW FAULDS
