Hypnosis

on BBC Two England

- and Healing
A war-time RAF navigator describes how a rash appeared on his body following a near-miss incident. It disfigured him for 30 years yet began to clear within six weeks of his learning self-hypnosis.
This was one of the scenes in the documentary Hypnosis and Healing which, when it was first transmitted last year, attracted over 10,000 letters. It is being repeated as the first in a series of four films that sets out to relate hypnosis to medical science. Patients and their doctors talk about hypnosis and show how helpful it can be. A 10-year-old asthmatic boy tells of his new life made possible by hypnosis. A factory worker who lost his voice speaks again-but only in trance. This is the first stage of treatment in which his doctor believes his voice will eventually return.
This film asks whether hypnosis is a panacea or an increasingly important adjunct in the doctor's armoury. Future programmes examine research in the use of hypnosis in pain control, for psychosomatic illnesses and as an aid to memory recall in police work.
